Benefits of Sunday Morning

Sunday school is a large part of the Jr. High Ministry at Southport Pres. It always has been. When I was in Jr. High, I remember always enjoying Sunday School and looking back on it now, I can see just how formative it was to my faith. Not only did I learn more about God and His Word, but I was also exposed to other people in the church and eventually even went to the Worship Service. Without getting into the worship services as a teen, I’m not sure I would’ve developed into the man I am today. That is one of the reasons that I am very excited and encouraged about our Step into Community hour.

According to pew research, the biggest contributing factor to older teens/young adults walking away from the church is not ever having been in a worship service. As they got to the age of autonomy and were responsible for themselves choosing to go to service every Sunday morning, many people had no idea what to do. They had never developed relationships with the older members of their congregation and never learned or experienced the importance of regular corporate worship. They would search for a Sunday school or “youth” group for their age but they would find none. Eventually, they would feel like an outsider at their church and inevitably drift away. Step into Community is a fantastic opportunity for our younger students to develop relationships with our more seasoned congregants and vice versa.

Sunday morning worship does many things. The word of God is preached (quite well if I do say so myself), songs of praise and lament are sung, prayers are prayed and the body of believers comes together to worship our great God.
