The Source of Inspiration

Mega props to Laurel Camp for uncovering the source of my inspiration for the phrase "we assume God's finger is hovering over the smite button".
Our Assumption....
I suspect most of us imagine that God has (or soon will) grow fed up with His people, with us. How could He not? We assume that while He is gracious and kind, there are natural limits to that graciousness and kindness. We figure…sooner or later….His love is bound to harden. How could it not…mine does!!!
And there it is = our assumption is fatally flawed. Why would we assume that God would be like us…all while scripture invites us to be like Him? Just because we grow weary and hardened, doesn’t mean our God does.
The Reality...
Truth is, our God is so very different than we are in this respect. It’s the very reason why we need a bible. Our natural intuition will only give us a God like us. But, when we look into scripture, the God who shows up is stunning in His unshakable and unfaltering love for us.
Psalm 86:5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
Joel 2:13 Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.
(See also Ex 34:6; Num 14:18; Nehemiah 9:7; Ps 86:15; 103:8; 145:8; Jonah 4:2)
Be of good cheer…Gary Larson may have revealed our flawed presupposition of our God…but not the God who is.
