EPC General Assembly
This week, I am in Memphis for the annual General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. One of the reasons I joined the EPC is because we have a "connectional ecclesiology." Wow! Who knew you'd be reading such big words on a Tuesday???
A connectional ecclesiology simply means that our view of church is that we are not independent of other churches. In Acts 15, the early church had an important matter to resolve. They went about it by having elders from each local congregation meet up with the apostles in Jerusalem to discuss the matter and come to agreement together on how to move forward.
Our denomination is divided into 14 Presbyteries, which are regional groups of churches. Our Presbytery is made up of about 50 churches in Indiana, Michigan, and Western Ohio. We meet 3 times a year as a Presbytery and once as a General Assembly.
This week, in addition to conducting business, we'll also receive encouragement from the Scriptures and training in ministry effectiveness. For example, today's speaker is Dr. Ligon Duncan and his series of messages is titled, "Combating Biblical Anemia in Scripture, Discipleship, Worship and Preaching." Tomorrow's message is titled "Soul Care for Pastors."
If you are interested, you can read more about it at www.epc.org/ga. Thanks for sending me to the General Assembly!!
